This piece was made for the Newcastle Region Art Gallery in Australia. It generated a pathetic but, through the technological nostalgia, romanticized view typical of Newcastle city, which overlooks the ocean.
A simple optical effect produces the ocean wave effect and simple mechanisms made from trash materials render ships sailing across the horizon line, and occasional aircraft flying overhead.
The overall compositional and structural format of the work was taken from F.E. Church's "Heart of the Andes" presentation, but with the presidential portraits above replaced by a camera obscura projection of the light bulb, the primary source of the visual illusion.
