This piece was made after returning to New York from Australia, after that long, long flight across the Pacific Ocean. In the shadow of 911 air travel had confused, or perhaps lost, its romance, and that common cinematic view from the airplane window now is loaded with alternate emotive potentials.
This piece was produced quickly from materials lying around in my studio. An arm endlessly rotates a miniature surveillance camera giving it a view of a sheet of plywood across some cardboard and tape with pen lids glued to it. The end effect on the sideways TV screen replicates the view from an airplane window. The VCR on the floor is not connected to any aerial so picks up a faint and static filled signal which is played through the audio on the TV and renders an audio track to go with the visuals that assists the overall illusion.
